Ancestral Honor of the Atayal (Mug)
Ancestral Honor of the Atayal (Mug)

According to legend, the ancestors of the Atayal were born from a crack in a rock. To bear children, the sister painted her face black and pretended to be another woman, marrying her brother. Thus began their tradition of facial tattoos. This work is inspired by their headdresses and tattoos, symbols of honor affirming a man’s ability to hunt and a women’s ability to weave, which allowed them to wed.

This mug set is a tribute to the Atayal tribe, one of the indigenous groups of Taiwan. The design is inspired by the facial tattooing (patas) practice of the Atayal tribe, which is a unique and sacred ritual for marriage. The facial tattooing dates back some 1,400 years and is a symbol of adulthood and social status among the Atayal people. The mug set features vertical and horizontal lines that resemble the tattoos of the Atayal men and women, symbolizing their bravery, skill, and fertility. The men’s tattoos are earned by hunting and headhunting, while the women’s tattoos are earned by weaving and menstruating. The mug set is made from high-quality porcelain, with a matte glaze that creates a smooth and elegant finish. The matte glaze is fired at high temperatures, ensuring food safety and durability. The mug set also has a relief detailing that adds a touch of texture and dimension, enhancing the artistic value of the product. This mug set is a perfect blend of tradition and innovation, showcasing the rich heritage and artistry of the Atayal tribe.
